More Water, More Physics?
The soccer mode wasn't perfect based on what we saw from the playtest. Physics was fun, said the players, but the soccer wasn't as much satisfying. First, the physic material isn't set to the bouncy side, which made the ball stops when it hits the wall. Secondly, players are just pushing the ball from both sides, causing everyone just stuck at the same position. As a result, we increased the ball's bounciness and speed significantly. Now the ball is flying around the field, which looked well but soon brought up another question: the players are not as fast as the ball, so all they keep doing is chasing it from behind. It surely isn't the most interesting way to play soccer. But the number of players limits our choices. The more we played with the soccer mode, the less we are interested in keeping a ball on the field.
We restarted a rough prototype with the level components we had from the game jam version. Springs, spikes, water ponds. Two brawlers are fighting around these components. The game wasn't very satisfying until the moment a non-controlled player was added to the game. It was flying around the arena due to unintentional collisions. This moving object brought a lot unknown to the game. Then we figured out our next direction: something that keeps moving that isn't controlled by the player.
The first thing we added was a spinning stick, it will always spin at the center of the arena, and swipes anything that comes close. Then we remembered the bricks we had in the game jam version. It gets destroyed when filled with enough water. So how about we fill water to all different objects and make them move faster as they get more water? Now the spikes, springs are all responsive to the water bubbles. Hopefully this could bring some joy to the game.
